
What Is a Retinal Vein Occlusion?

A retinal vein occlusion (RVO) occurs when a vein responsible for draining blood from the retina becomes blocked. This interruption in blood flow can lead to bleeding, retinal swelling, and vision changes.

The retina depends on healthy circulation to function properly. When a retinal vein becomes obstructed, fluid and blood may leak into the retina, sometimes causing swelling in the macula, known as macular edema.
