Eylea®

Living with retinal conditions such as wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic macular edema, or retinal vein occlusion can put your vision and independence at risk. One of the most widely used and trusted treatments for these conditions is Eylea® (aflibercept) injections. Eylea is an FDA-approved medication that works by blocking a protein called VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor), which is responsible for the growth of abnormal, leaky blood vessels in the retina. By reducing vessel growth and leakage, Eylea helps control swelling, preserve vision, and in some cases, even improve clarity.

How Eylea Works

Eylea belongs to a group of medications known as anti-VEGF drugs. VEGF is a naturally occurring protein in the body, but in certain retinal diseases, too much VEGF is produced. This triggers the growth of weak, abnormal blood vessels under the retina that leak fluid or blood, leading to swelling and damage. Eylea binds to VEGF and blocks its effects, helping to restore a healthier balance in the eye and reduce vision loss.

What to Expect During Treatment

Eylea injections are performed in the office under sterile conditions. Before the injection, your eye is carefully cleaned and numbed with anesthetic drops to ensure comfort. The injection itself takes only a few seconds, and most patients describe the sensation as pressure rather than pain. Afterward, it’s common to notice mild irritation, watering, or a scratchy feeling, but this usually resolves within a day or two.

Benefits of Eylea

With ongoing treatment, Eylea can slow or stop the progression of retinal disease. Many patients experience stabilization of their vision, while others may notice measurable improvement. Because retinal conditions are chronic, regular injections are usually required to maintain the benefits. Your doctor will create a personalized schedule, often starting with injections every 4–8 weeks and adjusting based on your response.

At East Florida Eye Institute, we are proud to provide Eylea injections as part of our advanced retinal care services. Our team is highly experienced in managing complex eye conditions, and we are committed to making every step of treatment as comfortable as possible.
