Syfovre®
For patients with geographic atrophy (GA), an advanced form of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), treatment options have historically been limited. Syfovre® (pegcetacoplan) is the first FDA-approved medication for geographic atrophy, offering new hope for slowing the progression of this sight-threatening disease.
How Syfovre Works
Unlike wet AMD, where abnormal blood vessels leak fluid, geographic atrophy is caused by the gradual breakdown of cells in the macula—the part of the retina responsible for central vision. Over time, this leads to blind spots that make it difficult to read, recognize faces, or perform daily tasks.
Syfovre works by targeting a part of the immune system called the complement pathway, which is thought to play a role in damaging retinal cells. By regulating this pathway, Syfovre helps slow the progression of cell loss in the macula. While it does not restore lost vision, it can delay the expansion of blind spots, helping patients preserve their sight for longer.
What to Expect During Treatment
Syfovre is delivered as an injection into the eye, performed in-office under sterile conditions. Here’s what you can expect:
-
Your eye is cleaned and numbed with anesthetic drops.
-
The injection itself takes only a few seconds.
-
Most patients feel only slight pressure, and mild irritation afterward typically improves within a day or two.
Because geographic atrophy is a chronic, progressive condition, regular treatment is needed. Syfovre is typically given every 25 to 60 days, depending on your doctor’s recommendation and how your eye responds. Ongoing monitoring with imaging tests helps track the disease and guide your personalized schedule.
Benefits of Syfovre
The key benefit of Syfovre is that it is the first treatment proven to slow the progression of geographic atrophy. Clinical studies have shown that it reduces the rate of vision loss over time, giving patients more time to maintain their independence and daily activities. While Syfovre does not cure AMD or reverse vision already lost, it represents a breakthrough in care for a condition that previously had no treatment options.
